THE BOUNDLESS MASTER OF GLASS ART

Micke Johansson became a master glassblower at just 24 years old and has since created outstanding works that combine advanced techniques such as graal, ariel, and sculpted glass. He has also developed the unique double-ariel technique, a method Micke is likely the only one in the world to master. His experimental spirit and courage to push the boundaries of Nordic glass art were shaped at the Pilchuck Glass School in the USA, where, through a scholarship from Ulrica Hydman Vallien, he had the opportunity to explore and combine the delicate Italian glass techniques with the robust Nordic tradition.

"I started at the glass school right after junior high. The plan was to learn engraving, but it turned out I was a natural at glassblowing. After just a few months, Orrefors offered me a permanent position when I was 16."

A SPIRIT OF GLASS

ART IN FORM AND FIRE

Micke Johansson is a master who both designs and blows his own glass pieces, a rare skill that requires the highest level of both craftsmanship and artistry. His creative process is like a vibrant dance, where the glass is shaped with precision and passion in the meeting of heat and cold. Through a meticulous balance of temperatures, solid glass is transformed into a vibrant work of art, where each layer acts as a prism, playing with light and color. In his works, the ariel technique is the heart – a captured spirit of air that brings the glass to life and allows it to speak with its own, mystical voice.

THE ART OF CAPTURING AIR IN GLASS

A double-ariel requires weeks of complete concentration to achieve perfection. Micke Johansson works with extreme precision, as the margin for error throughout the process is minimal. "It only takes an open door letting in a cold draft at the wrong moment, and the hot glass mass risks cooling in a way that could cause the entire piece to explode," explains Micke Johansson.

The Ariel technique, developed in the 1930s at Orrefors by Gustav Bergkvist, was inspired by the air spirit Ariel from Shakespeare's play *The Tempest*. In the ariel technique, patterns of enclosed air are created by rolling the glass in several layers where sandblasted patterns trap air. This results in floating patterns within different layers inside the solid glass. A double-ariel means this advanced technique is applied twice, further deepening and enhancing the visual play of layers and light in the glass.

After nearly 30 years as a glassblower, Micke Johansson is still full of ideas for techniques and combinations he wants to test and develop. "People thought the air I trap in the double-ariels would never hold. That it would become unstable and crack. But it worked, and I have a whole bunch of other ideas and experiments in the works. I still have 30 years left in my career—who knows what will happen..." – Micke Johansson
