Anders Zorn (1860-1920) was born in Mora. His fame rested on his skilled portraits, and he came to portray many famous people, including presidents and royalty, for example Theodore Roosevelt was portrayed in an etching. In the late 1880s, Zorn began working in the genre that would increasingly become his signature, outdoor nudity. The movements of the water and the reflections of the light on the surface of the water. It was something that had long interested him and the motif was complicated by placing a model near or in the water, with the aim of depicting a synthesis between man and nature. In 1896, the Zorn couple moved home to Sweden and Zorngården in Mora. This led to an increased interest in the home area, which would be reflected in his paintings.
The etching Al 1917 is a typical Zorn motif with nudity in the open in close proximity to water. The naked models create a synthesis between man and nature. Of the 289 etchings Zorn made, Al is no. 277. The work is signed in pencil in the lower right corner.
