Helene Schjerfbeck (1862-1946) is one of Finland's most famous and appreciated artists. She is well known for her more pared-down images where in the end only the most meaningful remains. Thus, the point of contact in Schjerfbeck's painting is most apt when she balances between strong, but sensual at the same time. The most important thing for her was an intense relationship with what she depicted. Where Schjerfbeck strove to capture the essentials and be honest with herself and the subject. Throughout her life, she tries to maintain her ability to combine power with sensitivity. Schjerfbeck can be described as a persistent seeker, who developed his greatness through self-awareness, boldness and sensitivity. To walk uprightly in one's own way, without letting the work beat down one's will and conviction. The largest collection of Schjerfbeck's art is currently managed by the Ateneum in Helsinki.
