"The elephant is an animal that has featured in my paintings for over 10 years. They keep coming back to me, and I feel a strong connection to these animals ever since my time in South Africa and visits to Kreuger Park. I have donated several large original paintings that together brought more than SEK 200,000 for charity and saving the elephants. That is what I am most proud of in my work as an artist. That I can contribute to what is close to my heart. In 2023, I am planning a trip to Africa to meet them again in the wild and begin a collaboration with an organization in Africa.
Bamse is our cat's name and I became particularly fond of this elephant and therefore named him Bamse. I love how he goes into the paint and you have to stop to discover what other figures there are. With her colorful figurative abstract paintings, Karin Holmström has captured the feeling of life and freedom in powerful brushstrokes and dancing shades of color. Enter a world of courage and wonder symbolized by majestic lions and elephants.
Karin Holmström, born 1978, lives and works in Stockholm. Through an academic background in economics and work in the business and fashion industry at H&M, the passion to create has always been there, like a freedom valve. Several art studies and courses in parallel with work have given Karin Holmström a solid foundation to stand on. Nowadays, she has established herself as a full-time artist with great attention from exhibitions in Sweden and internationally, including in London, Paris, and Amsterdam. Karin Holmström's paintings have also been represented as study furnishings in "Malou after ten"
Karin Holmström paints layer upon layer in search of the right feeling and expression that she wants to convey with the painting. Oil and acrylic are applied and blurred, together forming an abstract haze through which the motifs slowly find their way. Colors and shapes group together and all of a sudden, the motif emerges. A final brushstroke gives the whole painting life and energy. The fluid dimensions invite the viewer to search for constantly new interpretations and impressions.
The creative journey and the courage to explore, to be open to life and what it can contribute, is a consistent theme in Karin Holmström's life and creation. The courage to dare, to believe in one's ability and what can be achieved can be found in her visual world. The female figures are often reflected in a confident movement forward, a reflection on where they are going and what they want to achieve.
Wild animals and especially elephants take up a lot of space in Karin's motifs. The impressions from exchange studies to South Africa and the trip to Kreugerparken have burned into her. The large animals come to Karin in dreams and thoughts with words of wisdom and lessons for her to convey via the screen.
