A JOURNEY THROUGH INNER & OUTER LANDSCAPES

STEFAN KAVSJÖ

In Kullavik just south of Gothenburg, Stefan Kavsjö lives and works in his studio. Here next to the sea, the special light is a constant companion, whether it's a late summer evening or a midwinter day. The pursuit of the clouds across the sky and the ever-changing light is for Stefan the absolute strongest source of inspiration. Educated early at art school in Gothenburg, Stefan Kavsjö already had several successful exhibitions as a 23-year-old. But life took a different turn, and he took a long break from painting, although creation has always followed Stefan in one form or another. Since a couple of years ago, he and the painting studio have been reunited with new energy. The living interior and exterior expanses carry an unimaginable source of inspiration that Stefan Kavsjö brings with him in the brushstrokes and the contrasting landscapes.

IN THE MOMENT OF CHANGE

Stefan Kavsjö paints landscapes in the moment of change. An abstract impressionism that emphasizes the feeling of a natural landscape with its enigmatic shifts without being directly descriptive.

ABSTRACTION IN HARMONY

MASSIVE CLOUDS & BEAUTIFUL LIGHT CHANGES

Stefan often wanders in the powerful natural landscape next to his home on the west coast. Powerful clouds and beautiful changes of light find their way subconsciously into the studio and the brushstrokes. He doesn't choose the subjects - they come to him.

"It has happened that I walked past a place and suddenly recognized it from one of my paintings."

Working primarily in oil, he masters an unusual older technique called layer painting, where layers upon layers of thin oil glazes and paint create visible depth and seductive shifts of light.

"I HAVE TO CAPTURE THE DRIVE & RHYTHM OF THE COMPOSITION ALREADY IN THE FIRST SKETCH. WHEN I STAND IN FRONT OF THE CANVAS, I KNOW EXACTLY WHAT TO DO. THEN, THE END RESULT MAY STILL BE SOMETHING DIFFERENT.”

SUBCONSCIOUS PROCESSES

“Once the painting is finished, I almost forget how I produced it. Just like the landscape outside, so too is the landscape inside. The moment has passed and somehow turned into a picture. There is no rational explanation. Even if I start from a sketch or a memory, I don't stand and think while I paint, but have to follow the flow and the right feeling to capture the mood of the moment."

Stefan Kavsjö's paintings are slowly built layer by layer in thin layers of oil glaze. An unusual older technique called layer painting. The result is a visible depth that draws the viewer into the painting's seductive light changes.
