Description

The guiding force behind Lothar's work is sculptural beauty. In his artistry, he transforms small everyday objects into great miracles where the cold solidity of bronze radiates warmth. The surreal combination of dream and reality entices us to touch the surface, to reassure ourselves of reality. Lothar's hyper-realistic cherry collection playfully invites us to take a bite even though we know the fruit isn't real.

Lothar Vigelandzoon was born in Paramaribo, Suriname, and lived in the Netherlands from 1966 to 2000. Since then he lives and works in Vence, France, and exhibits in Europe, the USA and Singapore.

A MODERN ALCHEMIST

Lothar's artistry is reminiscent of a modern alchemist in his play with the material. With his touch, he transforms bronze into edible fruit within us with a perfectly accomplished balance of form and color. Skillfully, Lothar leaves just enough for the viewer's imagination to paint a wonderful world of dreams, beauty, and calm. A world of augmented reality. It appears simple, which is part of the magic he creates.

AN ILLUSION OF AUGMENTED REALITY

The cherries and fruits can, with their mere presence, give you a breather in everyday life. The sight of them affects and draws in the viewer. An aura of augmented reality with the feel, look and natural beauty of cherries but in a bigger and more perfect version. Your subconscious mind believes the fruits are real and entices you to touch them and take a bite.

THE FINAL TOUCH

The patina is created with a careful and demanding process where the surface of the sculpture is burned and treated with acids to achieve the desired shade and texture before wax is used, this time for polishing. For Lothar, this is the key. The sculpture is then mounted on a highly polished base to ensure they are perfectly balanced and presented to maximum effect.

ANCIENT CRAFTSMANSHIP METHODS

Lothar casts his tantalizing bronze sculptures using the ancient lost wax method that has been used by artists and craftsmen for over 6,000 years. By remaining true to these traditional methods, Lothar attaches a dimension of the wingspan of history to the very contemporary works. He forms the original figure in wax and coats it with plaster to create the mold. It is then heated to melt the wax that is poured off, leaving a hollow mold ready to be used in the casting of the bronze sculpture.
