PAINTING PARADISE

IAN RUSTH

Ian Rusth is a self-taught artist. His first exhibition took place in an old tobacco shop and is said to have been a success from day one, even though he chose to paint on the other side of the canvas. Since then, he has refined a characteristic expression, unique on the art scene today, and has become one of the country's most loved artists. Here we have an artist who neither waited for art schools to accept him nor adapted to current fashion. He has taken matters into his own hands, goes his own way and creates the world that he sees within himself. Recurring symbols and figures in his colorful world are grand turn-of-the-century villas, pinnacles and towers, buses of all kinds and dogs. The thoughts are brought to France and not least Paris with its picturesque outdoor restaurants and old buildings.

The beautiful, subtle and slightly enigmatic motifs have also attracted interest in Great Britain, France and the Netherlands and have also appeared at quality auctions far outside Gothenburg, where Ian Rust has his studio today.

In this exclusive collection, created for the exhibition at Galleri Melefors in Linköping, we experience qualities such as curiosity, playfulness, an enigmatic rapture about life itself and the dream of creating a paradisiacal world through art and painting. Welcome to an exhibition where you can enter the fantastic universe of the charming naivist Ian Rusth.

PARIS BY BIKE

When Ian wanted to go to Paris in his younger days to experience the life of an artist, he did as he usually does - he took the bicycle. Once there, he soaked up the creative atmosphere, camped in the Boulogne Forest and then took the inspiring impressions back to his beloved Gothenburg to express what he saw within himself in his charmingly messy studio.

THE GOTHENBURG PAINTER

A cat is purring next to Ian when we meet him. He guides us through the house, shows us paintings and tells us about his long journey as an artist. The house where Ian Rusth lives and works is located in Majorna. Anyone who has visited Ian in the studio (located in the house's tower room overlooking the city's harbor) soon notices that the home and workshop have the same charm and playful creative joy as his subjects. Here, frames, paintings of various sizes, paint cans and brushes that are used extensively come together.

MYSTERIOUS MOTIFS

Recurring symbols and figures in Ian's colorful world are grand turn-of-the-century villas, pinnacles and towers, buses of all kinds and not least the red little dog that appears in most of the paintings. Thoughts are brought to France and Paris with its picturesque outdoor terraces and old buildings.

The beautiful, mysterious and slightly enigmatic motifs have not only been exhibited in Sweden but also in places such as London, France, the Netherlands, Norway and have subsequently appeared at auctions far outside Gothenburg where he currently has his studio.

THE CHARACTERISTIC FRAMES

Ian creates the characteristic frames of original paintings with his own hands. He uses door linings from old demolition sheds which he scrapes, joins together and supplies with paint and gold leaf. These ingredients have become his signature and have charmed art lovers since the beginning.
