LARS TUNEBO X ROBERT HILMERSSON

WORLD CITIZEN

In the same spirit as Basquiat, Warhol and Picasso, the artists Lars Tunebo and Robert Hilmersson move with a curiosity about the present and its big questions. In their respective artistry, one can discern a common thread where questions are asked about what role we humans play in the world vis-à-vis our fellow travelers - the dear animals, global citizens in their own right.

We see motifs that often reflect animals in different, human, environments: Animals in fine clothes, an elephant in the middle of New York's bustling street life, or penguins challenging each other in a tennis match wearing matching outfits.

In typical pop art, the two artists question the modern, technological, and commercial symbols that exist in our time and subtly place them next to the timeless creatures of the animal kingdom and the natural that has existed on mother earth since the beginning of time. This creates a contrast and a combination that is hard to forget.

Something that can be seen in both artists is a desire and a curiosity to explore technology and the newly developed tools of modern times. They like to float away on exciting ideas but at the same time always have their feet on the ground with a firm foundation in the directness and human closeness of painting.

Welcome to a thought-provoking exhibition that offers both laughter and reflections!

LARS TUNEBO

Lars Tunebo, born in 1962 in Lysekil, has made himself known on the world's art scene with his unique self-taught talent and his colorful works. In the studio in Gothenburg, he explores techniques and materials that range from bronze to glass, painting, photography and mixed media. With an impressive presence in prestigious private collections and over 25 years of significant exhibitions in Europe, the Middle East and the United States, his artistic voice resonates worldwide. His work is a web of laughter and reflection where vibrant animals, sometimes dressed in human attire, are placed in bright cityscapes around the world in both unexpected and entertaining scenes.

ROBERT HILMERSSON

Robert Hilmersson (born 1973) is one of the country's most interesting and internationally recognized artists in pop & street art. A recurring theme in his work is to place known places, events and animals in unexpected situations. The human attributes are juxtaposed with those of the animal kingdom to reflect our present in a thought-provoking and at the same time humorous way. The strong symbolism in the images attracts thought and invites reflection on the subject concerned. Robert Hilmersson does not shy away from big subjects – politics, social problems and not least the climate where his characteristic penguins keenly look at the viewer. One of Robert Hilmersson's major sources of inspiration is the pop art icon Andy Warhol, where the influences can be seen in the use of everyday objects to reflect larger subjects.

YOUR GUIDE TO HILMERSSON & TUNEBOS ART

As a global citizen, art is a way to express yourself and make yourself understood. Art is a universal language that reflects us and allows us to see new parts of ourselves, new perspectives and a new way of looking at our world around us, our planet and the animals. That is why we are proud to be able to present an exhibition with Lars Tunebo and Robert Hilmersson, two of Sweden's most current and internationally interesting pop artists today.

Two artists with different expressions and yet similar approaches. Here are six things to keep in mind as you explore their visual worlds:

ANIMALS WHO REFLECT OUR TIMES

A common thread that emerges when looking at the artists' creations is animals placed in different contexts. What happens when humans switch places with animals? What do we as viewers experience when we see our animal friends wearing suits or heels? And what does that say about our world? In the works, we meet our dear animal friends (global citizens in their own right) with love and humor. And if we look even closer, we soon discover a commentary on the contemporary treatment of the natural world. Or is it about a sharp-sighted urban culture? The cities in Lars Tunebo's artwork are filled with colorful animals from the savanna - in Hilmersson's colorful motifs, the penguin and its innocent radiance can be found. We get to take part in a humorous as well as serious depiction of animals, humans, and our common place on the planet. As if the animals in the pictures are asking "who are we under the costume?". Maybe we are more alike than we think?

HUMOR (GOTHENBURG VERSION)

New York and other classic port cities have always been filled with influences from the outside world. They often become culturally rich places where artists seek inspiration and where different cultural expressions meet to create completely new types of art. Both Robert Hilmersson and Lars Tunebo are based and active in the Gothenburg area and their art is today present in large parts of the world. Perhaps it is also no coincidence that one seems to discern a certain Gothenburg humor in the way the two artists put titles and how they choose to convey their messages - all the time with a twinkle in their eye. First they make us laugh - then they make us think.

THE POSSIBILITIES OF TECHNOLOGY

As artists, they are not afraid to take on the artistic techniques and tools of the new age. The seemingly photographic works that Lars Tunebo shows during the exhibition are produced using the latest AI technology ("Artificial Intelligence"). The artist's toolbox may change with the times, but the process, as always, requires a brilliant idea that is skillfully executed with the right feeling and artisanal precision. The works depict sharp motifs with delicious lighting depicting animals in costume, motorcycle gear and other human attributes that we are not used to seeing. This makes us relate to those who would be the familiar. A strange, humorous and exciting reality that tickles our imagination and creates new questions. What do the suits do to us and who are we without them?

THE INFLUENCES OF MUSIC

The music we listen to in our youth often follows us through life and provides both references and influences. Growing up as rock reaped great success, it has followed through Tunebo's and Hilmersson's lives. The collection contains several works where titles from influential musical works and the contemporary motifs are combined with great playfulness and humor. With the help of rock music, we see the symbolism of the works with new eyes, even with our ears - another sense.

ON THE SHOULDERS OF GIGANTS

In the same spirit as Basquiat, Warhol and Picasso, the artists Lars Tunebo and Robert Hilmersson move with a curiosity about the present and its big questions. With unabashed winks to the shoulders of the former giants they stand on, new vintages and interpretations are created in the spirit of pop art.

With references we recognize, but in new environments, perspectives are changed and questions are brought up to date. Through the collections, Hilmersson and Tunebo tip their hats to art's Francis Bacon, Basquiat, Botero and Warhol as well as music's classic rock idols. Can you find all the references?

LONG INTERNATIONAL PRESENCE

Today, being a global citizen is easier than ever, not only through air travel but also through social media and internet phenomena. For artists, this means an opportunity to reach out into the world, a chance that Tunebo and Hilmersson take. Their art has been shown and sold to collectors far beyond the country's borders.

Lars Tunebo and Robert Hilmersson are two internationally present artists with the world as their field of work and a huge track record behind them. They both have works represented at international auctions and in private collections of dignity. Elton John himself has ordered a portrait signed by Robert Hilmersson and Lars Tunebo has exhibited in Dubai, Monaco, Helsinki, Los Angeles and Marbella, among others.
