Robert Hilmersson

Robert Hilmersson is one of the country's most interesting and internationally recognized pop- & street art artists. The recurring theme in his work is to place famous places, events, animals, nature and urban themes in different situations. Human attributes are often used to reflect our present in a thought-provoking but at the same time humorous way. The strong image symbolism attracts thoughtfulness and invites reflection on the subject in question. Robert Hilmersson does not shy away from the big topics - politics, social problems and above all the climate - where his characteristic penguins keenly observe the viewer. One of Robert Hilmersson's major sources of inspiration is the pop art icon Andy Warhol, where clear influences can be seen in the use of everyday objects and attributes to reflect larger subjects.

Early impressions of street art

When Robert Hilmersson, at the age of 14, saw a film about the graffiti scene in New York, something happened.

What started as an interest in graffiti quickly grew into a fascination with street art legends like Basquiat and Keith Haring.

Over time, the path led him into the world of contemporary art, where he drew inspiration from icons such as Roy Lichtenstein, Rauschenberg and Warhol – artists who also embraced the strong visual expression with roots in street culture.

Mixed media – the right technique for the right work

In his studio in Kungsbacka, Robert Hilmersson alternates between symbol-rich collages and more stripped-down works where single figures are the focus. His collage paintings are loaded with color, humor and detail, created to constantly give the viewer something new to discover.

The process often begins with a clear idea or concept, followed by a pencil sketch or digital master. The work is then built up using brush, acrylic, oil, spray paint and other techniques, always with the goal of choosing the right expression for each image.

The animals that reflect us

In Robert Hilmersson's world, animals take the place of humans. They wear suits, step in heels and pose with a naturalness that both amuses and provokes thought.
Behind the playful expression is a sharp look at our times, how we reflect ourselves in animals, and what it says about ourselves.
Humor and seriousness meet in each work. Because sometimes it is only when the animal looks back that we truly see ourselves.

About Gallery Melefors

Johan Melefors, born 1971, founder and CEO of Galleri Melefors, grew up in a family that is the third generation in the auction and antiques industry. Already during his childhood, Johan developed an interest in art and since the early 1990s has collected and traded classic, modern and contemporary art. He started Galleri Melefors in Linköping in 2013 when he moved home from Stockholm to his birthplace of Linköping, which he felt lacked an art store and gallery with a breadth of established collector's art and a well-thought-out and future-oriented contemporary catalog to display.
