Hilmersson, Robert

Get to know

Robert Hilmersson is one of the country's most interesting and internationally recognized pop & street art artists. The recurring theme in his creation is to put known plastics, events, animals, nature, and big city themes in different situations. Often human attributes are used to reflect our present in a thought-provoking but at the same time humorous way. The strong visual symbolism attracts thoughtfulness and invites you to reflect on the subject in question. Robert Hilmersson doesn't shy away from the big subjects - politics, social problems and above all the climate - where his characteristic penguins scrutinize the viewer. One of Robert Hilmersson's major sources of inspiration is the pop art icon Andy Warhol, where clear influences can be seen in the use of everyday objects and attributes to reflect larger subjects.

ANIMALS AS HUMAN MIRRORS

A common thread in Robert Hilmersson's visual world is animals placed in different contexts, often in combination with humorous titles. What happens when humans switch places with animals? When do we see our animal friends wearing suits or heels? In Hilmersson's colorful motifs, the penguin and its innocent radiance can be found. And if we look even closer, we soon discover a commentary on the contemporary treatment of the natural world. We get to take part in a humorous as well as serious depiction of animals, humans, and our common place on the planet. As if the animals in the pictures are asking "who are we under the costume?". Are we more alike than we think?

EARLY IMPRESSIONS FROM STREET ART

At the age of fourteen, Robert Hilmersson saw a film about the graffiti culture in New York. Something clicked inside him, and he knew he wanted to create images. From the world of graffiti, the step was not far to begin to be influenced by street art artists such as Basquiat and Keith Haring, young Americans who began their career as street painters before becoming big names on the art scene. The interest in the street and hip-hop movement later led Hilmersson to the contemporary art scene, where he found inspiration in artists such as Roy Lichtenstein, Rauschenberg, and Andy Warhol, who were also partly inspired by the strong expressions of the young graffiti painters.

ILLUSTRATIONS IN THE FOOTSTEPS OF THE IDOLS

Just like several of our most famous artists today (eg Carl Larsson and Andy Warhol), Robert Hilmersson began his career as an illustrator. He studied graphic design and also went to art school where he became increasingly interested in all expressions of art. He began experimenting more with acrylic, oil, and spray paint in various combinations to then find his own expression and symbolic language.

MIXED MEDIA - THE RIGHT TECHNIQUE FOR THE RIGHT WORK

In his studio in Kungsbacka outside Gothenburg, Sweden, Robert Hilmersson alternates collage images filled with symbols, colors, and messages with more stripped-down works where one or a few figures are at the center. In the collage paintings, he weaves in messages and symbols to create an image world that the viewer never finishes looking at, you must constantly discover new elements in the image. Most of the time, he knows exactly what he wants to paint before he begins an artwork. A concept or an idea sets off the spark and then the painting begins with either a prototype in pencil or a digital sketch which he then develops using brush, acrylic, oil, spray paint and other tools.
