Born in 1929 in Pittsburgh, as Andrew Warhola, Andy Warhol came to represent more than just the American condition. He became a central icon in the development of artistic production in relation to mainstream mass-produced culture and commercialism. Warhol is considered one of the founders of the pop art movement and perhaps the most influential figure. Andy Warhol trained in graphic design and made a rapid career in New York's advertising world during the 50s. The first exhibition as an artist was in 1962 with the 32 reproductions of the Campbell Soup cans.
In his creation, Warhol used enlarged photographic images that were silk-screened directly onto canvas and/or paper. This technique allowed him to quickly and cheaply produce a series of mass media images that he marketed to the public. Iconographic objects such as soup cans, US dollar bills, Coca-Cola bottles, as well as the various faces of celebrities and politicians became highly sought after pieces. Andy Warhol was active until his death in 1987.
