Christian Koivumaa

Get to know

Christian Koivumaa is a watercolor artist with roots in Tornedalen and now active in Katrineholm in Södermanland. With a sure hand, he depicts beautiful light and fairy-tale moods in his watercolor paintings, often with the different playing guises of the peculiar Nordic light as a common thread. We viewers are invited to wander for a while in wonder among the city's warming streets and under the play of lights of the northern lights over the northern mountains. In Christian Koivumaa, we see a potentially timeless artist who, with both feeling and technical skill, depicts our contemporary times and at the same time manages to capture the eternal.

The watercolor master from Tornedalen continues his artistic journey from clarity to clarity. A year into being a full-time artist, Christian Koiuvmaa stands firmer in his artistry than ever before. With a sure hand, his brush dances over the paper and accurately captures environments, scenes and light. As adept at the large sweeping wet-on-wet fields as at the small whimsical details of the characters that populate his worlds, he masters the moodiness of watercolor. At the Affordable Art Fair, Christian Koivumaa brings a wide collection that reinforces his strength. From the Norrland mountains of the home village to depictions of Stockholm, from majestic sunrises in backlight to the play of shadows in the alleys of the old town. Everything captured with the same sharpness and feeling.

The new exhibition catalog will be published on November 24 at 09:00. Below you see examples of existing works.

THE NORDIC LIGHT FILLS YOU WITH WONDER

Christian Koivumaa is a master at watercolor painting. With a steady hand, he manages to depict something very elusive - the play of shadows among the city's warming streets, the mysterious northern lights above the tops of the spruce forests & the breathtaking expanses of the northern mountains. If you look closer, you will find both outstanding details & a mysterious depth, filled with the longing that we all carry within us, which Koivumaa has made an art to capture on the paper. Volatile, abstract, and precise at the same time.

DISTINCT CONTOURS AND THE CHANGES OF LIGHT BALANCE TIME AND THE ETERNAL

We see the art of being able to balance both distinct contours and shifting light as a sign of a skilled artist who creates independently of the trends of the present time. In Christian Koivumaa we see a potentially timeless artist whose artworks can continue to attract generations of art lovers as it both depicts our time and at the same time manages to capture the eternal.

Christian Koivumaa is already a well-known name in the watercolor world and the development promises an even more brilliant future. His technical skills combined with the light and the beautiful and narrative motifs invite a rare artistic beauty and sharpness. Don't miss the chance to experience Christian Koivumaa at Galleri Melefors.

A DIFFICULT TO MASTER TECHNIQUE THAT AMAZES

Christian Koivumaa is a master in the watercolor medium. The water-based technique is considered capricious and often takes on a life of its own due to its fluid unpredictability. Despite the unwieldy "wet on wet" technique (a special challenge in watercolor), Koivumaa depicts both light and fairy-tale moods with such precision that the viewer finds himself amazed.

The spectacular and mysterious northern lights are one such motif that often recurs in Koivumaa's art. The Northern Lights have a special place in his heart as they remind Christian Koivumaa of his childhood roots in the magical natural landscape of the far northern Tornedalen. In the sky, we reflect ourselves and in the motifs, we see people looking up in deep wonder at the play of the northern lights under the vault of stars.

THE JOURNEY FROM AN ELITE ATHLETE TO MASTERING WATERCOLOR

When he was 12 years old, "Karate Kid" was on TV and Christian started in Haparanda's Karate Club. He aimed high, with the goal of winning the WC and the Olympics. But nine Swedish Champion titles later, he injured himself and his career came to a premature end. A life without karate took a toll. With inspiration from his wife Christian started trying new interests. The pieces fell into place when he found watercolor painting, which quickly grew to become the great passion that now occupies Christian's life.

Watercolor is a difficult technique that requires deep concentration and presence of the artist. As a watercolor painter, you often compete against time, which is something Christian Koivumaa knows well as a former elite athlete in karate. He competed at the highest level in the national team and is at home in the mental focus and patience required to master his art. With the same discipline and passion, he now tackles his atmospheric painting.
