Frequently Asked Questions
Carl Larsson - Sven Lamm
Carl Larsson is one of Sweden's and the Nordic countries' most appreciated artists of all time. His pictures, especially the idyllic depictions of home and life at Lilla Hyttnäs in Sundborn, radiate a bright and warm sense of life that still shines upon us today. Carl & Karin Larsson's home Lilla Hyttnäs would have a revolutionary impact on home decor far beyond Sweden's borders and formed the framework for Carl Larsson's work in words and images. Carl Larsson is one of Sweden's foremost artists of all time.
The portrait of the little boy depicts Sven Lamm (born 1908), the second youngest son of Carl Robert and Dora Lamm. The work was painted at Näsby Castle, where the Lamm family lived from 1905. Carl Larsson immortalized the little golden-haired Sven in profile by drawing on paper. The magnificent rococo table reportedly originally belonged to Lovisa Ulrika, Queen of Sweden from 1751-1771.
The dedication on the back from Carl Robert Lamm to Dora Lamm reads:
“Dear Dora.
Here with a look so gentle,
You get Sven Olof's picture.
The childlike soul that is seen to radiate,
Did Larsson know how to paint?
So that in the old days,
It may remain supported.
And remember the time,
Long gone.
When you turned thirty-five
And Sven Olof gilded everything.
Don't just remember Sven,
But even if your friend.
- Carl Robert Lamm, Näsby, February 4, 1915”
