Salvador Dalí (1904-1989) was one of our greatest modern artists and an icon of surrealism. Dalí's fantastic expression in paintings, sculptures, films and writings helped to cement the identity of Surrealism. Drawing inspiration from Freud's psychoanalysis, Einstein's theory of relativity, impressionism and Renaissance painting, Dalí rendered symbolist, fantastical creatures and landscapes. Few artists have had such a peculiar universe as Salvador Dalí, where an imaginative mix of madness executed with technical perfection and precision reigns. His painting "The Persistence of Memory" from 1931 is one of the most famous works of art of all time. Dalí lived as he created - in constant movement, in search of immortality.
The basis for the sculpture "Man with butterfly" comes from Dalí's famous tarot series created especially for his wife and muse Gala, who nurtured Dalí's interest in mysticism. The image that depicted the "Devil" card illustrates a figure falling towards the unknown holding up a butterfly. Dalí wished to see his two-dimensional artwork transformed into three-dimensional. T he classical male figure is sculpted with great detail in the tradition of the Renaissance masters by whom Dalí was greatly influenced, especially Leonardo da Vinci. The sculpture suggests harmony and perfection with the hair fluttering with the movement. An image of classic beauty. Dalí's symbolism we see here is the butterfly representing metamorphosis and transformation, two themes that particularly interested Dalí along with immortality and incarnation. The butterfly is held high and seems to represent the liberated soul evolving into a higher consciousness. The sculpture Man with Butterfly leaves everyday life behind in a celebration of life force, where the man and the butterfly symbolize the duality of body and spirit.
