Salvador Dalí (1904-1989) was one of our greatest modern artists and an icon of surrealism. Dalí's fantastic expression in paintings, sculptures, films and writings helped to cement the identity of Surrealism. Drawing inspiration from Freud's psychoanalysis, Einstein's theory of relativity, impressionism and Renaissance painting, Dalí rendered symbolist, fantastical creatures and landscapes. Few artists have had such a peculiar universe as Salvador Dalí, where an imaginative mix of madness executed with technical perfection and precision reigns. His painting "The Persistence of Memory" from 1931 is one of the most famous works of art of all time. Dalí lived as he created - in constant movement, in search of immortality.
Salvador Dalí distorts and reinvents a classic religious depiction through his unusual and surreal interpretation. In his unique way, he portrays the traditional image of God and the divine trinity. In the center of the artwork we see a giant thumb extending upwards. The power and supremacy of God the Father is represented by the thumb from which all life emanates. The condition is symbolized by the young growing branches. To the right of this divine being stands humanity in the form of a male figure, bursting with the vitality of life, representing the son of God. He directs his growing branches upwards but is also firmly rooted to the ground. To the left of the Creator, the presence of the winged figure represents the Holy Spirit. The angel is depicted meditatively, his chin resting on his hand and his wing supported by a crutch. The figures of angels, which reappear in Dalí's work, often borrow features from Gala, and they represent purity and nobility for Dalí. He seems to be reflecting on the crack in God's facade, a grave flaw that reveals the masonry within.
