Salvador Dalí (1904-1989) was one of our greatest modern artists and an icon of surrealism. Dalí's fantastic expression in paintings, sculptures, films and writings helped to cement the identity of Surrealism. Drawing inspiration from Freud's psychoanalysis, Einstein's theory of relativity, impressionism and Renaissance painting, Dalí rendered symbolist, fantastical creatures and landscapes. Few artists have had such a peculiar universe as Salvador Dalí, where an imaginative mix of madness executed with technical perfection and precision reigns. His painting "The Persistence of Memory" from 1931 is one of the most famous works of art of all time. Dalí lived as he created - in constant movement, in search of immortality.
Dalí's soft clock is centrally draped against a tree whose roots wrap around a rock. The bell is elongated and its malleable form seems to take on the shape of the tree that shoots new shoots with tender leaves growing from the branches. Symbolism of new life. In the sculpture, the clock is decorated with a crown. The English phrase "The Crown of a watch" refers to the mechanics that allow us to turn, correct and set the hands of the watch. Without this important component, the watch cannot keep time and show correctly. Dalí plays with this notion as Dalí's clocks are timeless and cannot be set. Dalí's clocks have no movement and thus lose all meaning. The very essence of time is lost and melts away. The crown of the clock can be interpreted as a royal crown, symbolizing the dominion of time over us humans and governing our existence in the real world, unchangeable and uncontrollable by man. Alongside time are two recurring figures: a meditative angel representing the soul and a female figure covering herself with a shawl.
