"Mary Frith was both loved and hated. She was better known as Moll Cutpurse in the London underworld in the early 17th century. She got her name because she cut the wallets directly from the Canvases of her victims. Mary was a thief, heeler and pimp. She wore men's Canvases, smoked a pipe and is said to be England's first female smoker. London's taverns were filled to see her comic performances where she danced, sang and played her lute. The divided audience both cheered and booed as Mary's accomplices emptied their pockets. Although she was arrested many times, she usually escaped lightly. Once she was put on a boat with America as her destination but jumped off and swam to land. Both women and men visited Mary's house on Fleet Street in search of a lover. She had noticed that there was an untapped market among wealthy women so she offered both male and female escorts. Thieves brought their loot and were paid for it, even those who had been robbed to buy back their possessions at a higher price. It was usually quicker and easier than going through the courts. Business was booming and she filled her house with beautiful mirrors to show off her vanity. Mary also employed three maids to look after her parrots and macaws, each of whom had their own bed with sheets and blankets.

Mary was widely known even during her lifetime and several plays and books were written about her."

“Silent Stories” is an art project created by husband and wife Andreas Lundberg and Annie Vesterdahl Lundberg. Andreas is a photographer with a background in advertising, fashion and documentary photography. Annie is a hairdresser, make-up artist and in the project also a stylist. Each work is inspired by a true story or life story. Andreas and Annie have made their own interpretation of these stories and sometimes they have changed the time period and place. The creative process is often long and exciting, a constant search for a story that they can fantasize about and turn into a work of art. Hundreds of sketches that are turned and twisted eventually become a photograph. The Silent Stories art project started in 2016. Each work is signed and numbered in a limited edition. The stories that the photographs have been inspired by are attached to the back of the works.

About Gallery Melefors

Johan Melefors, born 1971, founder and CEO of Galleri Melefors grew up in a family that is the third generation in the auction and antique industry. Already while growing up, Johan developed an interest in art and since the early 1990s has collected and traded in classic, modern and contemporary konst.Galleri Melefors in Linköping, he started in 2013 when he moved home from Stockholm to his hometown of Linköping, which he then thought lacked an art shop and a gallery with a wide range of established collector's art and a well-thought-out and future-interesting contemporary catalog to view.
