The Princess and the Bird

The shepherdess Lena guards the queen's sheep and has an angelic singing voice. She receives a golden key from three fairies - a key to the paradise of dreams. There she meets a handsome knight with whom she dances every night, unaware that he is the same man who woos the queen. When Lena tries to win his heart, she arouses the queen's wrath and is subjected to difficult trials. In the end, the fairies intervene and conjure away the cruel queen, so that Lena and the knight can have each other and create their own paradise of flowers and birds.

In Helle Bang's interpretation, the shepherdess Lena has become a princess – a symbol of the victory of love and dreams. All fairy tales deserve a happy ending.

Helle Bang's sculpture The Princess and the Bird is inspired by the fairy tale The Golden Keys, written by W.E. Björk and published in Among elves and trolls 1915 with illustrations by John Bauer.

Since early childhood, Helle Bang has been inspired by the beautiful mystery of nature. From the girl's fascination with the Limfjord to the artist's eternal source of inspiration and creation. In nature there is both heaven and earth, energy and harmony.

This is where our contemporary artist finds his calling – to create an enchanting bronze tribute to art, history, nature and the magical world of John Bauer. The sculptures are handcrafted from scratch in clay with inspiration from Bauer’s fairy tale world and cast in bronze in a limited edition of 36 pieces. After casting, each piece is carefully processed and polished by the artist.

Galleri Melefors together with artist Helle Bang donates 1000 SEK per sculpture sold from Bauer Collection Edition 36 in favor of Lisa Bauer & The Bauer Quartet and their work in setting John Bauer's art in music and song. Upon full sale of all 11 works, the scholarship amounts to 396,000 SEK.

About Gallery Melefors

Johan Melefors, born 1971, founder and CEO of Galleri Melefors grew up in a family that is the third generation in the auction and antique industry. Already while growing up, Johan developed an interest in art and since the early 1990s has collected and traded in classic, modern and contemporary konst.Galleri Melefors in Linköping, he started in 2013 when he moved home from Stockholm to his hometown of Linköping, which he then thought lacked an art shop and a gallery with a wide range of established collector's art and a well-thought-out and future-interesting contemporary catalog to view.
