By Karin Broos (b. 1950 in Uppsala) paintings the water runs like a sparkling lifeblood with both seductive beauty and undercurrents of melancholy and darkness. Her works are almost photorealistic depictions of young female figures in everyday situations with an enormous emotional charge and depth. In Broo's world of motifs there is often a charged ambiguous thoughtfulness between the model and the surrounding sparkling water where the woman floats, stands, sits or looks down. The motifs are often taken from Värmland with Lake Fryken and the deep forests around it.
The mood in Karin Broo's paintings has art-historical parallels to the works of 17th-century Dutch painters Vermeer and Pieter de Hooch of women reading letters. But the frozen moments are also reminiscent of Edward Hopper's charged but still depictions of everyday situations.
Karin Broos is educated at the Royal Academy of Fine Arts in s'Hertogenbosch in the Netherlands. and has lived and worked as an artist in Värmland since 1975.
