Isaac Grunewald (1889–1946) was a Swedish artist and a central figure in modernism in Sweden. He was born in Stockholm and educated at the Royal Academy of Fine Arts, but it was his studies in Paris under Henri Matisse that were crucial to his development. Grünewald was known for his colorful and expressive works that often captured urban life, portraits and landscapes. He was also one of the leading voices for modern art in Sweden and contributed greatly to introducing the ideas of modernism. In addition to his painting, he was a committed art theorist and professor at the Royal Academy of Fine Arts. His influence is still felt in Swedish art today.
