Sigrid Hjertén
Sigrid Hjertén

Sigrid Hjertén (1885-1948) was born in Sundsvall and was a painter. She was a student of Henri Matisse in Paris. In 1911 she married the artist Isaac Grünewald. Their works had much in common in form, lines and warm and cold colors that meet. However, Sigrid Hjertén's art differed from Grünewald's by being much milder in colors with a more somber composition. From the 1920s, Hjertén's motifs consisted of French cityscapes, landscapes and portraits, but the minor tone and unrest grew more prominent during the 1930s and similarities to Van Gogh's oblique color strokes can be seen. In 1937, Sigrid Hjertén stopped painting due to increasing mental illness.
