From the front row, we experience Micke blowing his world-unique masterpieces. We also visit Kosta for a guided tour through the glass factory before it's time to have dinner at the Kost Boda Art Hotel with a three-course dinner in an environment shaped by the glass masters on the other side of the road. A day filled with experiences that we round off with a spa and overnight stay. Overnight and dinner package is offered to you as a member for SEK 3,740 double room or SEK 2,270 for single room.

GET TO KNOW MICKE JOHANSSON'S UNIQUE GLASS TECHNIQUES

Micke Johansson is the Swedish glass master who has not only carried on a rich Swedish glass tradition - he has taken it to completely new heights with incredible craftsmanship. The "Ariel" and "Graal" techniques are considered among the finest and were created at Orrefors in the early 20th century. On his own, Micke has combined and developed them into both "Graariel" and "Dubbelariel", two techniques that he alone in the world has mastered. The enormously demanding works take over a month to complete from grain to loaf.

DUBBELARIEL

"Red Sea", 30 cm high, 55 000 kr

The Ariel technique was invented in the 1930s at Orrefors by Edvin Öhrström. The name "Ariel" comes from the spirit of Shakespeare's play "The Tempest" and describes the airy and fleeting appearance of the technology. With air patterns inside the glass, enchanting works are created that seethe with magic and life as the light flows through the glass. It is an art form that continues to fascinate and admire people the world over. Micke Johansson has further developed the technique to "Double Ariel", i.e. Ariel pattern in two layers. An incredibly delicate process where each work takes over a month to complete. He is alone in the world in being able to blow double ariels.

TO THE ARTWORK

GRAARIEL

"Ruler of the Forest", 33 cm high, 48 000 kr

"Graal" is an enchanting glass art technique created at Orrefors by Knut Bergqvist and Simon Gate in the 1910s. By engraving patterns in a layer of colored glass over a cup of transparent glass, clear patterns and contrasts are created. Graal is a recognized and difficult technique in itself, but Micke Johansson has taken it to new heights by combining a Graal with an Ariel. With the finished Grail as a base, a layer of Ariel is placed on top. The combination of transparent and colored glass and the trapped air creates a shimmering and mysterious scene. Micke Johansson is alone in being able to create works in Graariel technology.

TO THE ARTWORK

3D-GRAARIEL

"Swordfish Reef", 31 cm high, 75 000 kr

A 3D-Graariel is another further development of technology combinations. With a Graariel as a base, Micke Johansson continues and creates sculptural elements on the outside of the works. Coral reefs, water droplets, or other effects attached while the Graariel is still soft and malleable. An extremely delicate process so as not to destroy the time-consuming craftsmanship involved in creating a Graariel.

OTHER TECHNIQUES

Micke Johansson also creates exquisitely beautiful works in the more common techniques of single-ariel, overhang and sculpted glass. Below you will see a selection. As always, you can find the entire catalog at melefors.com, where the works are depicted in 360 degrees.

KOSTA BODA

In the heart of the glass kingdom lies the ancient Kosta glassworks, whose kilns were lit for the first time over 280 years ago. Here, generation after generation of glass masters have developed and refined the craft to create works and design language that many Swedes have a fond relationship with. In the present with well-known names such as Bertil Vallien, Kjell Engman, Göran Wärff and Ulrika Hydman-Vallien. An institution within our craft culture as Sweden's oldest operating glass factory.
