Victor Ajayi (b. 1999) introduces Midnight Pretenders, an anticipated and daring new collection. Stepping into this surreal world, each painting is a cinematic experience—suspended between dream and reality. With vibrant bold colours and neon-lit figures, Ajayi’s works capture the pulse of urban nightscapes, where hidden desires and unspoken narratives collide.

Influenced by his love for cinematography, his artwork takes you on a visual journey through captivating streets buzzing with life and mystery. With light and movement at the core of each work, Victor Ajayi's artwork explores the city and the stories that are created when darkness falls and the city lights of the night takes over. Each artwork becomes like a scene in a movie, paused in the middle of the moment of tension, and tells a story characterized by mystery, melancholy and escapism. With deep inspiration in cinematic photo, reflections, light and movement form the core of each work and encapsulate the world that Victor builds.

"EVERY CORNER OF THE CITY IS A CANVAS WAITING TO BE PAINTED, A STORY TO BE TOLD"

Victor's creation is based on photographic observation, which gains more dimensions when it is transferred to the canvas with brushes and oil. Victor Ajayi's narrative visual world revolves around how our outside world transforms in the darkness of night. As dusk falls, it takes a new shape before our eyes, if only we stop and take the time to observe. Notice the small details of the surroundings, the light and the sounds, which whisper about the mysteries of the night.

“I create art through the lens of a filmmaker. Each piece begins with a vision, a story I want to tell. Like a director, I carefully select the right ‘actors’ who become my subjects, curate the wardrobe, compose the perfect scene, and meticulously control the lighting to convey the right emotions. The actual painting or drawing process represents only a fraction of the entire journey. Similar to the process of filmmaking, it involves extensive planning, editing, and condensing of ideas. The end result is an art that appears effortlessly crafted, mirroring the magic of cinema. Cinematography has always been a profound inspiration for my art. It’s the realm of emotions, movement, and life itself. I’m drawn to the entire filmmaking process: pre-production, casting, set design, and the art of crafting a storyline. In my art, I embrace the role of a director, where every canvas becomes a one-framed movie.
