Peder Monsted (1859-1941), was born near Grenå in Denmark and acquired a solid art education at an early age. Between 1875 and 1879 where was he enrolled at the Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts in Copenhagen where he studied under Frederik Vermehren, Julius Exner and Niels Simonsen. He studied also for a short time at PS Krøyer's painting school and in 1882-1883 he was also a student of William Bouguereau in Paris.
Mønsted is famous for his monumentally detailed landscapes painted in a romantic realistic style. His favorite motifs were the Danish countryside with its still, snowy winter landscapes, villages and dense forests. From the turn of the century until his death, he was one of the most famous Danish landscape painters, with great contemporary appreciation.
