Get to know

Ian Rusth is a self-taught artist. His first exhibition took place in an old tobacco shop and is said to have been a success from day one, even though he chose to paint on the other side of the canvas. SOUGHT AFTER & CHARMING NAIVISM

Ian Rusth is a self-taught artist. His first exhibition took place in an old tobacco shop and is said to have been a success from day one, even though he chose to paint on the other side of the canvas. Since then, he has refined a unique expression, unique on the art scene today, and has become one of the country's most loved artists. Here we have an artist who neither waited for art schools to accept him nor adapted to current fashion. He has taken matters into his own hands, goes his own way and creates the world that he sees within himself.

MYSTERIOUS MOTIVES FROM PARADISE

Recurring symbols and figures in Ian's colorful world are grand turn-of-the-century villas, pinnacles and towers, buses of all kinds and not least the red little dog that appears in most of the paintings. Thoughts are brought to France and Paris with its picturesque outdoor terraces and old buildings.

The beautiful, mysterious and slightly enigmatic motifs have not only been exhibited in Sweden, but also in places such as London, France, the Netherlands, Norway and have subsequently appeared at auctions far outside Gothenburg, where he currently has his studio.

PARIS TOUR AND RETURN BY CYCLE

When Ian wanted to go to Paris in his younger days to experience the life of an artist, he did as he usually does - he took the bicycle. Once there, he soaked up the creative atmosphere, camped in the Boulogne Forest and then took the inspiring impressions back to his beloved Gothenburg to express what he saw within himself there, in his charmingly messy studio.

RECYCLING AND GOLD LEAF CREATES NEW FRAMES

Ian creates the characteristic frames, artworks in their own rights, with his own hands. He uses door linings from old demolition buildings which he scrapes, joins together and enhances with paint and gold leaf. As much a part of the artwork as the painting itself, the frames have become his signature and have charmed art lovers since the beginning.
