Get to know

After his brilliant debut solo exhibition at Galleri Melefors, the enormously talented Victor Ajayi (b. 1999) is back with a long-awaited collection. With inspiration from the cinematic world, he has created a portal between the media. Like frozen images from movies, his works in oil and charcoal hang on the wall, paused in the middle of a movement or scene.

Victor's art opens the door to the beauty of the urban night. Influenced by his love of photography and film, his artworks become immersive worlds that transcend traditional boundaries. Victor Ajayi's compositions, like scenes from paused films, capture moments of tension, evoke emotion and invite exploration. As a director, each work is a journey with countless hours of dedication condensed into a single frame. Stage, composition, lighting - the final artwork represents the culmination of his artistic vision - a reflection of cinematic dreams.

"I LIKE TO THINK OF A PAINTING OR DRAWING AS A ONE-FRAMED MOVIE" - VICTOR AJAYI

Victor Ajayi (b. 1999) is born in Nigeria, grew up in Ireland and now works in Stockholm. His artwork moves within the realistic narrative with modern impressionistic elements. Here shines a natural talent that has found and developed a unique visual language in the combination of realistic oil painting and photographic composition. He is self-taught and paints mainly in oil and charcoal drawings.
Victor Ajayi creates a visual world where each work of art becomes like a scene from a movie, paused in the middle of the moment of tension. His creative process often starts from observant photography and reaches even more dimensions when it is transferred to the canvas with brush and oil or charcoal. With inspiration from cinematic photography, reflections, light and movement run like a common thread through Ajayi's artistry and we are invited to become observers of the night.

"EVERY CORNER OF THE CITY IS A CANVAS WAITING TO BE PAINTED, A STORY TO BE TOLD"

Victor's creation is based on the observation of the photo, which gains more dimensions when it is transferred to canvas with brush and oil. Victor Ajayi's narrative visual world revolves around how our outside world transforms in the darkness of night. As dusk falls, it takes a new shape before our eyes, if only we stop and take the time to observe. Notice the intricate details of the surroundings, the light, and the sounds, which whisper about the mysteries of the night.

"CINEMA IS EMOTION, MOVEMENT, LIFE ITSELF. AS I CREATE ART, I CHANNEL CINEMA"

In his artistry, Ajayi explores the city and the stories that are created when darkness falls and the shine from the streetlights takes over. Each artwork becomes like a scene in a movie, paused in the middle of the moment of tension, and tells a story characterized by mystery, melancholy, and escapism. Taking deep inspiration from the cinematic photo, reflections, light, and movement form the core of each work, encapsulating the world that Victor builds.

DISCOVER THE NARRATIVE REALISM OF VICTOR AJAYI

“I create art through the lens of a filmmaker. Each piece begins with a vision, a story I want to tell. Like a director, I carefully select the right ‘actors’ who become my subjects, curate the wardrobe, compose the perfect scene, and meticulously control the lighting to convey the right emotions. The actual painting or drawing process represents only a fraction of the entire journey. Similar to the process of filmmaking, it involves extensive planning, editing, and condensing of ideas. The end result is an art that appears effortlessly crafted, mirroring the magic of cinema. Cinematography has always been a profound inspiration for my art. It’s the realm of emotions, movement, and life itself. I’m drawn to the entire filmmaking process: pre-production, casting, set design, and the art of crafting a storyline. In my art, I embrace the role of a director, where every canvas becomes a one-framed movie. The beauty lies in having complete control, allowing me to tell stories on a smaller scale but with immense creative freedom.” - Victor Ajayi
