Per Ekstrom (1844–1935) was one of the first Swedish plein air painters, and like the Impressionist painters, he completed his paintings directly in front of the subject. He painted outdoors in the rain and snow. Ekström had a passionate interest in light, air and atmospheric effects. “He is crazy about sunrises, adores sunsets and is therefore always, in the summer at least, late for dinner.” In 1876 he arrived in Paris, and he was impressed by the painting of the Barbizon School, especially by the poetic landscapes of Camille Corot. Ekström painted in the French countryside, of course visiting Barbizon, after which he spent a long period on the rocky coast of Normandy. Later he would spend more time in the vicinity of Paris. During that period he added a suite of Impressionist paintings with marshlands and floods draped in a silvery haze of sunshine. At the World Exhibition in 1899, his landscapes attracted attention, and he was awarded a gold medal. When he returned to Öland in the late 1880s after his long emigration, he looked with fresh eyes at the barren plains and richer tones of the air of his homeland. Ekström was seen as "a poet of the brush".

Johan Melefors, born 1971, founder and CEO of Galleri Melefors grew up in a family that is the third generation in the auction and antique industry.
