Description

Angelica Wiik (1960) was born in Stockholm and now lives in Hälsingland where she has her studio. She paints expressive views of the life of the city that radiate female sensuality, music and sparkling joie de vivre. Wiik grew up in a family of artists where his mother Margot Öjemark (ceramist & cartoonist) was an important source of inspiration. Today, Angelica Wiik is one of Sweden's most famous artists and, since her debut in 1985, has participated in a large number of exhibitions at both fairs and galleries.

"I mourn my beloved dog, an angel to me." - Angelica Wiik

Technique: Lithography and hardened screen printing with metallic glitter
Edition: 290 numbered and signed sheets
Sheet dimensions: 57 x 35 cm (70 x 49 cm including frame)

Master printer Björn Lumphé (Lumphé Litografiska) prints Angelica Wiik's lithographs. The process takes a long time, where the artist and printer together build up the artwork one color at a time until the image is complete. Each color is printed separately and creates a deep and clear image with up to 14 layers of color. Finally, a hardened screen print with metallic glitter is added as a finish. Creating a lithograph is a real craft. Björn Lumphé has worked with the technique for over 20 years together with Sweden's most famous artists such as Madeleine Pyk, Ernst Billgren, Lennart Jirlow and Linn Fernström.

SENSUALISM, PLAYFULNESS & JOY OF LIFE

ANGELICA WIIK

Angelica Wiik is loved for her colorful views of city life with people, animals, and musical elements with an emphasis on jazz. The motifs radiate female sensuality, sparkling playfulness, and joie de vivre. Filled with hidden details, the canvases invite the viewer on a journey of discovery.

The motifs are taken from a separate mythological world that permeates her artistic imagery. Angelica Wiik paints a romantic and intensely life-affirming world to which one is happy to return again and again.

Through Angelica's pictures, a pronounced feminism shines together with a deep love for people, urban landscapes, and animals. Her family includes the dogs Otis, Aramis, and Olga – a stray dog from Thessaloniki in Greece that Angelica got in touch with through an animal rights organization.

THE POWER TO CREATE

DREAMS WITH THE SCENT OF JAZZ MUSIC

In her studio in northern Hälsingland, Angelica finds peace to paint and here she works passionately, sometimes all evening and night until six thirty in the morning. In 2006, Angelica Wiik went into the wall but through her recovery she discovered a completely new power in creation when she could paint again. She describes it as suddenly having "more speed, much stronger and clearer images".

The love of music is a recurring theme, especially jazz music, which runs like a red thread through the romantic painting. Angelica Wiik's pictures are like beautiful dreams, with musicians on the roofs and dogs in the windows. Together, everything forms a colorful world of seductive images that are often a little cheeky and fill the viewer with joie de vivre.

“I often listen to jazz music when I work and love to paint the more feminine instruments - saxophones, cellos, and violins. It is magical to paint their soft movements.”
- Angelica Wiik

INSPIRATION FROM THE THEATER

“Painting large pictures is like creating a scene. I am inspired by the theater and its magical setting with red draperies and dusty velvet chairs. It's like stepping into another reality.”

TRAVELING DEEP INTO THE PICTURES

THE CITY HOUSE BECOMES AN ADVENT CALENDAR

"I want people to be able to travel deep into my pictures - look for a long time, discover all the small details and experience a magical world. I love looking at houses. When I wander around cities, I see the lone street musician in an alley and the houses become like peeping cupboards or advent calendars with doors that I want to open. You wonder what is going on inside." - Angelica Wiik

ANGELICA WIIK - PAINTINGS

Angelica's paintings are filled with lovely details all the way around the edge of the canvas. She creates them layer upon layer, layer by layer, one color at a time. When the light is on, the rays are reflected in the embedded glitter and the effect is enhanced by the characteristic broken glass she attaches at the end. A fantastic life is given to the figures of the painting.
