"Lilya loved poetry and flowers. In her cockpit, she kept freshly picked wildflowers and painted a white lily on the dashboard for every plane she shot down. This earned her the nickname “The White Lily of Stalingrad.” Lilya Litvyak first flew solo at the age of 15. A few years later, Hitler launched Operation Barbarossa, and Lilya volunteered for the Soviet army. Initially rejected, her value as a skilled and strikingly beautiful pilot was soon recognized. The air battles were many, as were the painted lilies in her cockpit. During one mission, Lilya shot down a Bf 109 flown by ace pilot Erwin Maier, who had been awarded the Iron Cross three times. After parachuting to safety, Maier was captured by Soviet soldiers. He requested to see the pilot who had shot him down. When he was brought before a young Jewish girl, he thought it was a joke. But as Lilya recounted the air battle in detail, Maier realized he had been defeated by a woman.
“Achtung, Litvyak!” became the pilots' call when they saw the white lily painted on the tail of the Russian Yak-1. Her growing reputation made her a prime target for the Germans, and eight Messerschmitts focused on Litvyak’s Yak-1. The dogfight took place among the clouds, and Lilya was never seen again. The White Lily of Stalingrad was declared missing in action. In 1979, wreckage along with remains were found in a village in Ukraine. Ten years later, it was confirmed to be Lilya."

"Silent Stories" is an art project created by husband and wife Andreas Lundberg and Annie Vesterdahl Lundberg. Andreas is a photographer with a background in advertising, fashion and documentary photography. Annie is a hairdresser, make-up artist and, in the project, also a stylist. Each piece is inspired by a true story or fate. Andreas and Annie have made their own interpretation of these stories and sometimes they have changed the era and place. The creative process is often long and exciting, a constant search for a story that they can fantasize about and turn into a work of art. Hundreds of sketches that are turned and twisted eventually become a photograph. The art project Silent Stories started in 2016. Each work is signed and numbered in a limited edition. The stories that inspired the photographs are attached to the back of the works.
