Gustaf Fjaestad (1868–1948) around 1900, the winter landscape had acquired a deeper meaning as a symbol of a Nordic identity. This is clearly evident in Fjaestad's artwork, where hoarfrost, snow and ice are recurring motifs. In his paintings, a realistic endeavor is combined with a tangible stylization – the illusion of reality is combined with decorative forms. Fjaestad avoided wide vistas and instead painted close-ups of nature in radically cropped sections – a compositional principle possibly inspired by Japanese woodcuts. The technique is similar to pointillist painting. He was mostly active in the Värmland countryside where Lake Racken became the meeting place. The group of artists who lived there went by the name Rackstadsgruppen. In his career as an artist, Gustav Fjaestad has, among other things, assisted Bruno Liljefors when he wanted to paint a panoramic mural for the Biological Museum. In part, Gustav Fjaestad also helped Carl Larsson with the decoration of the National Museum's staircase and fresco paintings. A little fun curiosity about Fjaestad is that he competed in winter sports. In 1891 he became the world's fastest man on skates over the English mile and in 1892 he won Sweden's first cycling competition.
The motif "Rimfrost på gårdsväg" is a wonderful painting by Värmland's most noted classical landscape painter. Gustav Fjaestad welcomes the arrival of winter in classic fashion. The painting is in perfect condition after gentle washing and inspection by our conservator and fitted with a handmade gold leaf gilt frame. A real gem!
