Sigrid Hjertén was fearless and she experimented with color and often drew directly with the brush. Sigrid followed her instinct - she wanted away from the depiction and imitation of the light. There would be no shadows, just flat surfaces. Sigrid brought out the depth in the pictures with the help of color, completely in the spirit of Matisse. The important thing was to arrange the various elements in the painting in a decorative way. Sigrid formed her own, modern approach and often placed the objects in a deliberate imbalance in her compositions. She worked a lot with the diagonal in the paintings, something that is accentuated in the brushwork itself over time. In this way, she achieved a dynamic effect, which raises the tension in the image, she called it "the melody of the work of art". The French countryside became a balm for her sometimes troubled soul. She sought its uniqueness, above all around Le Puy, where she returned as to a dear old friend.
